Gifts To A City  was the Blackie's Summer Theatre for 1971.  It consisted of a series  of 9 Events which started on August 9th and finished on August 29th.

A Spring Happening by Alan Kaprow was first performed at the Reuben Gallery, New York in March1961.  It was recreated at The Blackie by Wendy Harpe in July 1969.

Inferno and Room of Roots were the result of the Blackie working with two postgraduate students (Jenny Carroll and Judith Blundell) from Theatre Design at the Slade College of Art and two dancers (Di Davies and Dennis Greenwood) from the London School of Contemporary Dance.

Banners consisted of a display of large banners hung across the site containing thoughts

The Idea:  To create a coloumn of Helium filled white balloons which went from the bottom to the top of the building site. This would hopefully sway in the wind which at this stage of rebuilding swept through the site. This turned out to be the first  of three installations involving balloons.

This event was created by DDart, a theatre group from Leeds Polytechnic Fine Art Department which included Jack Whirlpool and J.E.Latham.  We know this because the poster for the event and the publicity material says so.  We have no other paperwork or any idea of what the event was about.  The other thing we have are photographs and these are below.

Like Stars In Your Eyes was an installation by Clive Dilnot.  There are  no photographs of this installation.  However the original proposal still exists and represents pretty much what happened.  LIKE STARS IN YOUR EYES  SCULPTURE PIECE FOR GREAT GEORGES

The Idea was simple - to create a Flower Show on site.  The idea was put to Liverpool City Council's  Department of Recreation and Open Spaces who agreed to do it.

The Idea.  This installation was created  by Robin Riley; (his second installation for Building Sight); the following is his description of it. "Ghost Riders In The Sky (title of song) was used as sound for the event.

This was the first  of the Building site installations. It was a work by performance artists Shirley Cameron and Roland Miller. The Idea  Shirley, Roland and their twin babies would 'live'  on the building site for the day.
