INTRODUCTION DANCE INDIAN

In the early days of The Blackie, Indian and Chinese restaurants proliferated in the City (and still do).  Youngsters participating in activities were familiar with Indian food but  -  unless from a family with Indian connections  -  knew little or nothing about Indian music and dance.  Our first move (highly successful) to redress this imbalance was to invite Indian dancer Surya Kumari to join us for a playscheme.  Over the following years Surya then became a regular contributor to the cultural programme with workshops and performances at The Blackie and participation in the outdoor 'Garden Dances' and Festivals of Games.  Highlights in the Indian dance programme also included workshops and performances by Mallika Sarabhai and visits by the Kala Chethena Kathakali Company.
