Submitted by root on Sat, 04/26/2014 - 13:21 The Outside Room was the area where young people could let off steam, play physical games and chill out.  The room was usual arranged to include a climbing frame, swings, physical games ( from a vaulting horse to a snooker table) , an inflatable and places for lounging around. Basically what was created as an indoors adventure playground.   Over the years the exact mixture varied but the philosophy…

Easter Casino was the first playscheme to take place in The Garage.  The Garage was based in Roscoe Street, around half a mile away from the Blackie; it provided a home for the Blackie during the first rebuilding programme. Left Dave Rickus and colleague staffing the door for the Easter Casino Playscheme dressed appropriately  The Idea The inspiration for the playscheme was 'The Sting' ; 'the film' of 1974. So the setting would be that of…

Intro The majority of Themed Playschemes have been written up specifically for the Archive Website. This is not the case with 'Liverpool Firsts'.  Below is a Report which was written at the time.   It is unaltered apart from the condensing of some of the statistical information which in the original runs to several pages. This is also a playscheme where there are very few photos - the only workshop thoroughly photographed was The Liverpool…

Home is Where The Art Is was the theme for the 1995 Summer playscheme. There is comparatively little paperwork on this playscheme. There is a short report and a time-table which lists a whole range of activities on which we have no further information. Workshops Baking  Cooking has long been part of Blackie sessions - here the invitation was to research, bake, eat, take home and display breads from around the world. This lead to the creation of…

The Idea The summer of 1983 saw a variation - but in some ways also a continuation - on that year's Easter Play Scheme theme of wool and weaving. The summer's Play Scheme took the theme of spiders and their own weaving techniques. The theme proved to be very fruitful with a total of over 4,000 attendances over 54 sessions and some truly innovative takes on the spider theme. How it worked The sessions ran afternoons and evenings on Wednesdays…

The Idea : Our 1987 Summer Tour (part of Merseyside Play Action's Artists on Playschemes Initiative) was based on the participatory exhibition 'Eat Your Art Out' held at the Bede Gallery Jarrow in February 1987. As at Jarrow the participants picked a letter out of a 'hat' and then chose a fruit or vegetable beginning with that letter.  They could then have a juice made with their fruit/veg plus two others; and/or pick an object beginning with…

The Idea The Uptown Downclown Play Scheme  took place over 11 days during the winter break of 1983/84 (28th December - 8th January). The Play Scheme set out to explore the world of clowning through workshops where people could learn such clowning skills as acrobatics, juggling, stilt walking and unicycling. A main aim of the Play Scheme was for the kids and adults who participated in it and the Blackie staff who helped to run it  - working…

The Idea   The Food Events took a sideways look at food.  We created jewellery, cushions, ornaments, playthings, and poetry either made from food or inspired by food . We served food up in the form of a farmyard (the picture on the left is the farm house) and we allowed young people to eat their own words. This was our 1976 Summer tour and the work took place on 2 adventure play grounds (Speke and Stonedale) and in one summer play scheme at…
