This exhibition was aimed towards reflecting individual interpretations, through the medium of textiles, of the concept of a family, whether it be in the form of a visual metaphor as with Liz Pembroke’s work or perhaps, more simply, as a response to the presence of a particular member of a family, as with Betty Myerscough. This was the Blackie's  second participatory exhibition to be held at the Walker Art Gallery. It was part of Peter Moores’ second exhibition 'Body & Soul' and took place in the last week of this exhibition.

Inferno and Room of Roots were the result of the Blackie working with two postgraduate students (Jenny Carroll and Judith Blundell) from Theatre Design at the Slade College of Art and two dancers (Di Davies and Dennis Greenwood) from the London School of Contemporary Dance.

The first of the Blackie’s Rainbow projects – inspired by the political debate of the time on regenerating the inner cities, by the work of the artist Patrick Hughes (  and by the Blackie’s own tradition of public art, took place in the summer of 1978.

The Idea.  Sailing is about imagination. Combine the unfinished building and figures sailing in a mesh of steel girders. Could they go through the walls and into space? Sailing was Robin Riley's second contribution to Building Sight.  It was installed by Robin and his son Simon. The above is Robin's description of the installation.

The Idea:  to drape fresh seaweed over the beams.

The installation consisted of slides of the internal structures of the building material being used on the site. So slides of concrete, steel, bricks, etc. The slides were sourced from laboratories, and universities.  Overall there were 81 slides.  They were projected from within the site on a large screen on the back wall.

The Context:  The Blackie started its rebuilding programme in 1974  - as the building was stripped out there appeared the most amazing space which changed on a regular basis as the building work progressed.

Light on Sight was an event done to celebrate Wendy Harpe's birthday based on her Vigil For Peace.  The site was strongly lit, people clothed in black moved slowly along the beams placing lit night lights at the junctions wherever girders/ beams met.
