Themed Events

In Alfred Hitchcock's films, what he called the MacGuffin  -  such as the secret papers which the spies are after  -     is the engine which sets the story in motion.  But in terms of the drama, the actual nature of the MacGuffin is of no importance whatsoever.

The Blackie is next to Chinatown and we have long taken some part in the Chinese New Year celebrations.  In 1984, the Year of The Rat, (re-branded as the Year Of The Mouse – don’t ask) we did a street stall with trays of sugar mice in the 6 rainbow colours.  The many people who come to see the Dragon Dance and celebrate Chinese New Year were invited to make a wish for the New Year and enjoy a sugar mouse.

A set of six table mats each with a rainbow image and a set of 6 coasters each boxed.  The rainbow images were drawn from previous rainbow events and are set against a white background.  The coasters contained proposals for the formation of a Rainbow Party.   Rainbow images used:-  1. The visit to Poland resulted from a visit by Andrzej Kostolowski (art historian and critic) with two performance artists to the Blackie in 1979.  The invitation which came in July in 1980 was for Judy Bates (myself) to attend the 13th Plener Miastko entitled ‘Little Activities in Art’  to be held on 1s

The first of the Blackie’s Rainbow projects – inspired by the political debate of the time on regenerating the inner cities, by the work of the artist Patrick Hughes (www.patrickhughes.co.uk/films.htm)  and by the Blackie’s own tradition of public art, took place in the summer of 1978.

To celebrate the Blackie’s 20th birthday and the opening of the extended and completed ground floor as 'The Blackie Gallery', a six week cycle of contemporary textile exhibitions was introduced, with a new exhibition each week.

The Idea To paraphrase the Press Release for Going Solo; Solo dancing may be a solitary art form  but the Blackie celebrated this art form, over the 5 days of Going Solo, in a very sociable way.

Merseyside Firsts Summer Tour  The idea was an expansions from the 1986 playscheme 'Liverpool Firsts.'  In this instance the idea was to take young people on visits to places where there had been a Merseyside First and make a video illustrating  it.

The Vigil The Framework Alastair MacLennan created a chequered board made up of  black and white squares on the ground floor of the basement.  Above this he hung a network of strings each culminating in a suspended nightlight.
