Lorry Theatre took place very early in the Blackie's history  and it was the first attempt of working with communities in the open air.  Bill Harpe directed the event and, not surpringly, his Report On Lorry Theatre considers the role of the arts and artists when working with audiences who traditionally have had little or no relationships with either. Below major problems in farming are followed by solutions both for the farmers and for the community artists.     PROBLEM YOU HAVE BURNT OFF THE FOREST COVER ON YOUR MOUNTAIN LAND TO PLANT CROPS, YOUR SOIL IS NOW BEING WASHED AWAY DOWN THE SLOPE BY HEAVY RAINFALL, YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE LAND TO PRESERVE THE SOIL, AND STILL MAKE A PROFIT

In December 1980, a few days before Christmas, the Blackie learned (in company with 40 other Projects nationally) it would not receive a grant from Arts Council of Great Britain in the coming year. This meant the loss, in our 12th year, of 40% of our regular financial support. A strong dose of bad news to start off 1981.

 The following Report was compiled by a sub-Committee of the Arts Council's New Activities Committee. This included Bill and Wendy Harpe who were alternate members of the New Activities Committee plus Griselda Grimond, Jenny Harris and Rufus Harris.
